Basic Sewing Techniques

Sewing is a very common pastime for many girls and women in many parts of the world. It is also a great small scale and industry where poor ladies stitch clothed rather than using machines to do so. Even you can start sewing as a hobby and create some real great pieces of art, if not complete dresses. Given below are some of the most common sewing techniques and stitch styles.

• Backstitch: This is the strongest stitch that you can use when you hand stitch any dress. The technique is simple and if done well can make the final dress look really great with durable stitches. For this you need to first stitch twice to get the flow going. Follow this with a stitch and a short space. Now bring back the needle over the space and again stitch in the same direction. Once you are done, you can fasten the threads to seal the stitch.

• Hemming Stitch: This is used mainly to hem folding at the end of the fabric. For this you need to fold the fabric and fasten the thread at one end. Now stitch the dress taking just a few strands of the fabric along the fold by moving diagonally from left to right and go back and stitch paralleling in the same direction. The idea is to get in a pattern of diagonal stitches ensuring that very limited amount of the hemming thread is seen outside.

• Over Sewing Stitch: This is the best stitch for sewing the frayed edges of the fabric. For this you need to first decide the length of the stitch in comparison to how far you thing the fabric can fray. To fasten on end, start with a couple of backstitches. After that keep running diagonal stitches at equal distance till you cover one edge completely. It is important that you do not pull the stitches too hard and they can mess up the final look of the dress.

• Running Stitch: This is a very simple stitch and is used commonly to make the dress material seams. To start with, first add some backstitches to fasten the thread to the fabric. Now just fold the cloth like frills and pass the needle right through it. Once you have enough folds of fabric, just pull the needle and you will have the stitches in place. If you make the folds uniform, you can get equally spaced thread and space in the final design.

These are some of the most common stitches that you can use when you are sewing. Some of them are just for special places like hemming stitches while others can be used to stitch the dress usually. Backstitch is very common and is used with most stitches to hold the thread to the fabric.

While sewing may have lost its major market with the advent of machines, it is still one of the best forms of art that is practised in many homes even today. Besides, you can make inexpensive gifts and utility items with this skill.
